Gynecomastia or the enlargement of the male breast reduction is one of the 5 most popular procedures performed for men in the UK, as per the statistics from the BAAPS. This procedure describes the removal of tissue (glandular/soft tissue) and reduction of the male breast. Mostly there is not a known cause for this enlargement to the breast, but as many men are very self-conscious of this, the operation can be extremely helpful. This condition is common but is not often openly discussed, however more males in the UK are now seeking a solution to the problem. Many boys during their teenage years experience some enlargement in a breast or both breasts, but by adulthood in most cases this does not remain. The procedure can give the chest a flatter and more contoured appearance and may also enhance self esteem whilst reducing unwanted embarrassment.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Gynecomastia reduction is normally performed under a general anaesthetic takes up to 90 minutes to perform in theatre. The chest area is bruised and swollen after the operation, so to aid with any swelling a pressure garment made from elastic is recommended for up to 6 weeks. This should be worn at all times during this period, and any exercise is not to be undertaken for around 2-3 weeks. After approximately 4 weeks normal activities may be resumed.
