Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Tummy Tuck Procedure: Achieve a Flatter, Smoother Abdomen
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. It helps improve the appearance of the stomach, including the umbilicus, while tightening and reshaping the abdominal muscles.
This procedure is especially beneficial after significant weight loss or pregnancy, when skin may become loose, and stretch marks are often present. While a tummy tuck is not a substitute for regular exercise, it can be a highly effective option for individuals who struggle to regain a flat stomach even after extensive exercise. For many women, the abdominal muscles remain loose, and the procedure can help achieve a flatter and smoother abdomen.
For optimal results, it is recommended to undergo the procedure when you are already at a healthy weight that is in proportion to your height. During the tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles are also tightened to further enhance the appearance of your stomach. Liposcution with liposculpture can be performed at the same time to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result, body proportions and harmony.
What to Expect from a Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires a hospital stay of 1-2 nights. Before surgery, it is advised to stop taking the contraceptive pill one cycle before the surgery and take other precautions in addition to quitting smoking for four weeks prior to surgery and at least three weeks following the surgery or until healed, which reduces adverse effects and surgery complications. Post-surgery, moderate pain is expected, however, this is pre-emptively treated effectively with intra-operative local anaesthetic injections and post surgery regular pain-killers. A corset is typically worn for the first four to six weeks to support the abdomen as it heals.
After the procedure, patients should expect a period of recovery and avoid any physical activity or sports for at least six weeks to allow for proper healing.
